Hi there. Welcome back to my Blog. Hope you are all well! Life is pretty hectic at the moment but I am having a really great time. I told you recently that I was helping my friend set up a new café. Well I have really immersed myself into the role – I don’t think my friend was expecting me to do so much but she has been really thankful for my help and loves all of my design ideas. I am actually thinking about taking this up as a regular thing. I have a lot of friends in the area who are always looking for interior designers to help with design ideas for their homes and businesses so I think I would be able to find a fair bit of work. Word of mouth is obviously really important so if my friend is happy with everything I do (which she definitely seems to be so far) then I know this will get passed onto other people. Anyway, let’s see what happens…don’t want to run before I can walk!
An update on how the Café is looking…
So, in regards to my current project, things have really advanced since I last spoke to you. In my previous blog post I was on the lookout for some cool, retro furniture and I have managed to acquire just the thing! I came across an antique shop that was selling a really unusual pine and glass coffee table. I then managed to find some low, rounded chairs to go with the table which I got from a second hand furniture store. The chairs and coffee table go well together and create a really comfy setting! I also managed to get my hands on a high table that was being sold dirt cheap at a garage sale. They were actually using it as a work bench and I don’t think they were really planning on selling it but once I showed them some interest they were more than happy to let me have it. So I gave the table a good clean, a lick of paint and then sanded it down a little to create a rustic effect. I then brought some metal stalls to go with it and it fits in really great against the front wall of the café where people can see out on to the street and watch the world go by. I think creating different levels and textures in a space really livens it up and creates various points of interest for the customer. Along with these I have also brought some regular wooden tables and chairs to create a sort of canteen feel, I have livened these up by painting some of the edges of the tables and also the chair legs various bright colours, grey cushions on the seats off set this nicely. The walls throughout the café are a mixture of white and grey with a signature black wall at the back of the café where the counter is. This all works really well with the small pops of colour I have added. The black wall is actually blackboard paint so my friend can use it to write her drinks and food specials on as well as a few creative drawings - or whatever takes her fancy really!
Some quirky additions…
So me and my friend thought it would be cool to add a few quirky additions to the café. It is all about adding a little fun and creativity to proceedings whilst still adhering to the retro and vintage touches we have throughout. I guess what’s important here is to not go too over board and choose things that aren’t going to look pretentious or tacky – it is a very delicate balance! So a couple of ideas we have are... a retro arcade games table, a foosball table, a popcorn maker or a candy floss machine. I think getting all of these may be a little ott but I think a couple of them will really add a bit of flare to the place! I am definitely drawn towards the foosball table and the candy floss machine as I have seen the other two done a fair bit in other cafes and bars within the area. There is actually a business in town that is closing down and they want to sell their foosball table so all that we really need is to get our hands on a candy floss machine!
Buying a Candy floss machine…
Now, where exactly does one acquire a candy floss machine from? Well I came across some on http://www.lakeland.co.uk/18842/Gourmet-Gadgetry-Candyfloss-Maker. They are retro look candy floss machines and they are a good price but they all just seem to be too new or cheap looking which doesn’t really tie in with the style of the cafe.
So, what next? Well a friend of mine who does a lot of second hand buying online actually came across a sight that is selling candy floss machines but that are much older versions and still in really great condition. After looking on the sight myself I found a candy floss machine for sale that is really cool and retro and very reasonably priced. We are still undecided on what to do exactly but I think we will most likely go for this option!
Please let me know if you guys have any experience in buying a similar item and feedback on any of my design ideas would also be happily appreciated.
Hey everyone, welcome back to my home and garden blog. You might remember from a previous post that I do about 90% of my work at home. For some people this can be a terrible idea, as they have a very difficult time separating their work life from their home life. Sometimes I struggle with this as well, which is why I am now going to be setting up my home office. Here are a couple of the tips I am trying to keep in mind when setting up my home office. Hello everyone, welcome back to another exciting post on my home and garden blog. Me and my partner recently upsized our living conditions, and as such we have been looking for more ‘things’ to fill the house with. The first place that I thought needed filling up was our kitchen, up to this point we had only a toaster, blender and microwave. I wanted some more appliances and gadgets to fill the counters and help keep costs down, so I went over to my favourite website for used goods, http://www.used.forsale, and found some great deals on kitchen appliances and gadgets. Here are some of the ones I think will end up saving me money. Read more

Creative uses for a Kenwood K - Mix
Hi all and welcome back to my home and garden blog. I’ve recently redone my kitchen and one of the things I was really excited to buy a KitchenAid or a Kenwood K Mix. Seeing as we’d already spent a lot of money on the redesign and decoration of our new kitchen, we couldn’t afford to buy a brand new mixer, or the famed KitchenAid. Instead we had a look on my favourite second hand online classified ads website, www.forsale.co.za where I managed to scoop up the Kenwood K-Mix in Raspberry for an incredible price, and it came with some of the great attachments including the Spaghetti pasta cutter and the Flat Pasta Roller, although I have a feeling there’s still lots of attachments I would like to purchase! Hi folks, so Viv here again. So sorry for the lack of updates lately, but I’ve been madly gardening in the beautiful spring time, getting ready for summer. My sister and her two girls have recently moved into my neighbourhood and we have discovered that my garden is a mystical wonderland inhabited by many fairies, so we have created a little village of fairy cottages for them all to live. Thankfully there was a good supply of second-hand fairy cottages available online, so it has been a fun and cheap exercise. Read more
Welcome back folks. Today I wanted to share with you a big project I’m currently working on and the steps I need to complete before I achieve it. The main goal is to build a veggie garden and while I’d love to say that’s the essence of the project I’m currently working on, the truth is that for the moment I’m just laboring: cutting, clearing, weeding and pulling. The notion of planting and edging the garden seems a lifetime away at this stage. I cannot believe how rapidly, in just a short period of time, things can grow here in the tropics. I live up in the jungle next to the National Park so the variety of life here is wonderful. I’m literally surrounded by a million different shades of green. It feels like paradise, but along with it comes a lot of effort. Read more
Juicer and Juicing
Hey there folks. I’ve been feeling a bit run down of late which is why I have been a bit quiet here on the blog. I have been burning the candles at both ends and not maintaining the healthiest of diets if I am being honest. So I have vowed to make sure that I get a good seven to eight hours uninterrupted sleep a night from now on and take better care of myself. I’m going to also address my diet and get on a bit of a health kick. I’m going to do this by going on a juice diet for a week or so. That is right! I am going to officially be known as a juicer! I am going to use this blog post as an opportunity to delve a little deeper into the world of juicers for sale and the benefits that it offers. Is it for everyone? Is it even as healthy as everybody says? Let’s do a little research and find out. Read more
I know this is a bit of a move away from the norm but I have already spoken about my new interest in coffee and after having a play with my friends new bespoke coffee machine I thought I would discuss espresso coffee. Now this really does involve a scientific mind and an artist’s touch! I’m not saying I have quite mastered those two things but practice makes perfect! Anyway, what makes the perfect espresso and how do you achieve it? An espresso coffee is a strong, short shot of coffee with a well-balanced flavour. It is knowing how to create this balance that really does create the perfect espresso. Read more

Hi there its Viv again, another hectic few weeks have gone by but lots of exciting stuff I would like to talk about! Read more
Hey its Viv and I’m back for another chat. I’ve been a bit busy over the last week or so, so it’s been a while since the last time I got a post up. You know how it goes, another week goes by in the blink of an eye and you’re wondering where it went. I’d been doing trips backwards and forwards to my mother’s house as she hasn’t been well. I’ve been getting her shopping, cooking her food, there’s been trips to the hospital and all this whilst trying to fit in a job and some me time. Well things have thankfully calmed down a bit now. She’s back on her feet and feeling much, much, better so I’m back to just looking after myself. Read more
