  Leading car rental comparison website warns customers that winter tyres are essential at many ski destinations and do not come as standard

  30 November 2010 – Carrentals.co.uk, the UK’s leading comparison website advises those booking car hire for their winter holidays that winter tyres and snow chains should be booked along with car hire as many car hire companies charge winter tyres as an additional extra.

  Winter tyres and snow chains are not part of the car hire package and the majority of car rental companies will charge an added extra for these. But because many customers think that they will be included in the price, they end up requesting them when they arrive. This means that they risk lack of availability and having to make journeys without the correct tyres.

  Gareth Robinson, Managing Director of Carrentals.co.uk, says: “The laws can be confusing for many customers since they vary between countries. It is rarely the case that winter tyres are included as part of the car hire package, and customers can be surprised to find that this is the case. It is important that a ‘snow pack’ is requested at the time of booking of customers are expecting to travel in snowy conditions. The pack will include the appropriate tyres and will vary in price depending on the car hire company.

  “Customers travelling to places such as Milan or Geneva, may not need winter tyres unless they are making journeys into the snowy mountains. For this reason car hire companies do not include them for every customer. It is therefore important to inform the company about the nature of your journey and request winter tyres separately if customers will require them.”

  The laws and recommendations regarding winter tyres are as follows:

  Country – Winter Tyres Requirement
  Austria – Compulsory between 1st November and 15th April

  Canada – Recommended for mountain driving or snowy conditions, but not mandatory

  France – Recommended for mountain driving or snowy conditions, but not mandatory

  Italy – Recommended during the winter months as weather conditions cannot be predicted

  Sweden – Compulsory for Swedish registered vehicles between 1st December and 31st March

  Switzerland – Not mandatory, but drivers may be fined for not having winter tyres fitted if involved in an accident

  Germany – Not mandatory, but drivers may be fined for not having winter tyres fitted if involved in an accident

  USA – Recommended for mountain driving or snowy conditions, but not mandatory

  “As a precautionary measure is it also important that drivers carry snow chains at all times for their own safety, however these will only need to be fitted in bad conditions. Customers should request these along with winter tyres at the time of booking in order to guarantee the best prices and availability.”

  “It is possible to request snow chains from car hire companies but one way of keeping costs to a minimum is to purchase them from a local supermarket. This way customers can return them if they are unused.

  Skiers can find deals on car rental from £26 per day at Calgary Airport; 15 per day at Milan Malpensa Airport; Salzburg Airport from £21; and from £24 per day at Geneva Airport.
