Ways to make your house smell more Christmassy.
Hi everyone, Jen here again! Welcome back to my Home and Garden blog if you’ve been here before, and if this is your first time then thanks for stopping by and I hope you like what you read! I’ve just recently been shopping online for some great Christmas candles. I bought one of my favourites, a mulled wine one which I got from a website with lots of bargain deals online.
Seeing as our house is still in the middle of the renovation we haven’t yet begun to feel very Christmassy. We only decorated a couple of the rooms, and haven’t really felt in the christmassy mood. Last weekend however we decided enough was enough, it doesn’t matter that we’re currently living in a dump, we need to make it a christmassy dump!
Make your house smell like Christmas.
If you can’t make your house look like Christmas then you can at least make it smell like Christmas. If you’re unsure on the smell I mean then think about Christmas for a second and see what you can smell. Fresh snow? Peppermint? Fireplaces? Cookies? Whatever the smell you think of, I’ve got some great ways to make your home smell more festive!
One of the most iconic Christmas at home sights is a roaring fire. If you’ve got a little fireplace then now is the time to set up the fire and light those logs. If you, like me, don’t have access to a log fire then head to the shops and buy yourself a wintery woodsy scented candle. This should conjure up the same feeling, especially when combined with a digital christmas fire! Check out this article for more great festive candles; http://www.independent.co.uk/extras/indybest/house-garden/best-scented-candles-for-autumn-a7359771.html .
I’m sure I’m not the only person who absolutely loves mulled wine. Firstly the smell of mulled wine simmering away on the stove top, warm and spicy with cinnamon, wine, oranges and cloves. Literally christmas warmed up. And then there’s the taste. Nom, nom, nom.
When selling a house one of the best pieces of advice a realtor will give you is to bake cookies. And there’s a reason why. The smell of cookies baking away in the oven is one of those smells that everyone can imagine. Not only do you get the incredible smell of the butter and sugar caramelising away in the oven, but once they’ve been baked it’s someone's job to eat them!
If you have a real christmas tree in your house then I’m sure you’re aware of the great smell of freshly cut pine and evergreens in your house. If you don’t then have no fear! If you’ve got a fake Christmas tree and you want to make it smell like pine then head to the florist or to a nearby Christmas tree farm and get yourself some cut offs. Place them throughout your tree, or make a little display out of them for your table. Add some pinecones and you have yourself a great table piece. Unable to get any real greenery, you can always fake it! Get some pine oil, and mix it with some water. I find that 6 drops of pine oil mixes well with 1 cup of water. Spray it around the house and smell it all in, it makes you feel like a fairy.
One of the easiest ways to get your house to smell like peppermint is through using Candy canes as decorations. Decorate your christmas tree with them, add them to your table centerpiece, eat them! If you’re not a big fan of Candy Canes then you can use peppermint oil in the same way as the pine oil. I recommend 20 drops to 1 cup of water for the peppermint. It’s also great to use on your linen and laundry, and you can use it all year round! We have some in our garden so we get fresh mint all year.
Love the smell of ginger, and not sure what to do? Be old school and make yourself your very own little gingerbread house. Combine it with the peppermint and decorate the house with candy canes as well as gingerbread men. You can even use the gingerbread men in over scenes around the house so the smell isn’t held in just one room!
Created your very own homemade scent using Pot Pourri. One of the nicest thing about Christmas is that the Christmassy scents are all linked to some attractive plants and spices. Use Ginger, cinnamon sticks and cloves combined with rosemary and pine. Use little fabric bags and place them in drawers around the house. They also make great little festive presents.

Hey everyone, welcome back to my home and garden blog. You might remember from a previous post that I do about 90% of my work at home. For some people this can be a terrible idea, as they have a very difficult time separating their work life from their home life. Sometimes I struggle with this as well, which is why I am now going to be setting up my home office. Here are a couple of the tips I am trying to keep in mind when setting up my home office. Hi everyone! How are we all doing on this fine sunny spring day? I’ve been keeping myself busy learning all about the new kitchen appliances I mentioned in my latest blog post. My favourite appliance is obviously the Magic Bullet, and I’ve been raving about it ever since I tried it out. Read more
Hello everyone, welcome back to another exciting post on my home and garden blog. Me and my partner recently upsized our living conditions, and as such we have been looking for more ‘things’ to fill the house with. The first place that I thought needed filling up was our kitchen, up to this point we had only a toaster, blender and microwave. I wanted some more appliances and gadgets to fill the counters and help keep costs down, so I went over to my favourite website for used goods, http://www.used.forsale, and found some great deals on kitchen appliances and gadgets. Here are some of the ones I think will end up saving me money. Read more

Creative uses for a Kenwood K - Mix
Hi all and welcome back to my home and garden blog. I’ve recently redone my kitchen and one of the things I was really excited to buy a KitchenAid or a Kenwood K Mix. Seeing as we’d already spent a lot of money on the redesign and decoration of our new kitchen, we couldn’t afford to buy a brand new mixer, or the famed KitchenAid. Instead we had a look on my favourite second hand online classified ads website, www.forsale.co.za where I managed to scoop up the Kenwood K-Mix in Raspberry for an incredible price, and it came with some of the great attachments including the Spaghetti pasta cutter and the Flat Pasta Roller, although I have a feeling there’s still lots of attachments I would like to purchase! Hi folks, so Viv here again. So sorry for the lack of updates lately, but I’ve been madly gardening in the beautiful spring time, getting ready for summer. My sister and her two girls have recently moved into my neighbourhood and we have discovered that my garden is a mystical wonderland inhabited by many fairies, so we have created a little village of fairy cottages for them all to live. Thankfully there was a good supply of second-hand fairy cottages available online, so it has been a fun and cheap exercise. Read more
Welcome back folks. Today I wanted to share with you a big project I’m currently working on and the steps I need to complete before I achieve it. The main goal is to build a veggie garden and while I’d love to say that’s the essence of the project I’m currently working on, the truth is that for the moment I’m just laboring: cutting, clearing, weeding and pulling. The notion of planting and edging the garden seems a lifetime away at this stage. I cannot believe how rapidly, in just a short period of time, things can grow here in the tropics. I live up in the jungle next to the National Park so the variety of life here is wonderful. I’m literally surrounded by a million different shades of green. It feels like paradise, but along with it comes a lot of effort. Read more
Juicer and Juicing
Hey there folks. I’ve been feeling a bit run down of late which is why I have been a bit quiet here on the blog. I have been burning the candles at both ends and not maintaining the healthiest of diets if I am being honest. So I have vowed to make sure that I get a good seven to eight hours uninterrupted sleep a night from now on and take better care of myself. I’m going to also address my diet and get on a bit of a health kick. I’m going to do this by going on a juice diet for a week or so. That is right! I am going to officially be known as a juicer! I am going to use this blog post as an opportunity to delve a little deeper into the world of juicers for sale and the benefits that it offers. Is it for everyone? Is it even as healthy as everybody says? Let’s do a little research and find out. Read more
I know this is a bit of a move away from the norm but I have already spoken about my new interest in coffee and after having a play with my friends new bespoke coffee machine I thought I would discuss espresso coffee. Now this really does involve a scientific mind and an artist’s touch! I’m not saying I have quite mastered those two things but practice makes perfect! Anyway, what makes the perfect espresso and how do you achieve it? An espresso coffee is a strong, short shot of coffee with a well-balanced flavour. It is knowing how to create this balance that really does create the perfect espresso. Read more

Hi there. Welcome back to my Blog. Hope you are all well! Life is pretty hectic at the moment but I am having a really great time. I told you recently that I was helping my friend set up a new café. Well I have really immersed myself into the role – I don’t think my friend was expecting me to do so much but she has been really thankful for my help and loves all of my design ideas. I am actually thinking about taking this up as a regular thing. I have a lot of friends in the area who are always looking for interior designers to help with design ideas for their homes and businesses so I think I would be able to find a fair bit of work. Word of mouth is obviously really important so if my friend is happy with everything I do (which she definitely seems to be so far) then I know this will get passed onto other people. Anyway, let’s see what happens…don’t want to run before I can walk! Read more
Hi there its Viv again, another hectic few weeks have gone by but lots of exciting stuff I would like to talk about! Read more
Hey its Viv and I’m back for another chat. I’ve been a bit busy over the last week or so, so it’s been a while since the last time I got a post up. You know how it goes, another week goes by in the blink of an eye and you’re wondering where it went. I’d been doing trips backwards and forwards to my mother’s house as she hasn’t been well. I’ve been getting her shopping, cooking her food, there’s been trips to the hospital and all this whilst trying to fit in a job and some me time. Well things have thankfully calmed down a bit now. She’s back on her feet and feeling much, much, better so I’m back to just looking after myself. Read more
