Singing in the Shower
Hi folks, sorry it’s been a while. I’ve been moving around a lot and have had to relocate a couple of times. I’ve just got settled back in to be honest. Today I wanted to share with you the benefits of rejuvenating and spring-cleaning the bathroom, something that believe it or not can be incredibly positive and rewarding. I mention the bathroom because it has been a bit of a priority for me, and so the idea of spring cleaning, buying a shower, a shower curtain and all the associated bathroom accessories was quite a daunting task. At least at first.
To put you in the picture I need to tell you that I moved house again recently, back over to a very humid area up in the jungle close to the National Park. Due to the elevation and being right on the coast it has always been an incredibly humid and often damp environment – not good at all when it comes to your personal belongings especially anything electronic. I once opened my guitar case after it had been sat there for almost a year and the neck had naturally bent by a considerable amount. Learning the hard way sometimes is the only way I guess.
While unpacking and sorting through old furniture, kitchenware and other items, it became apparent just how much damage can occur by leaving things be for a while, even wrapped or boxed up. This was particularly the case with a box of kitchen items I’d packed away: chopping boards, lime juicers, ovenware and metal trays. Upon opening it all I was amazed to see just how much mould had defaced a lot of the items, while the aluminium products had corroded and looked as if they had been sandblasted, or possibly worse.
A Little Miracle
It was then that I discovered a tiny miracle. To me it was more important to repair or renew these items rather than throw them away as they had proved quite costly when I purchased them a few years back. So after a little poking around on Google and YouTube I discovered the little miracle of an item known as bicarbonate of soda - or baking soda as is commonly known – something that most people keep stored away at the back of a cupboard somewhere and forget about.
I was stunned to find that it has hundreds of uses, from cleaning around the house to neutralizing odours and furthermore a whole variety of health benefits including skin care. Depending how it’s prepared or what is mixed with (water, lemon juice, vinegar etc.) the applications and benefits are simply astounding.
In my case, a good measure of baking soda in a bowl of water with some white vinegar, left to sit for thirty minutes or so was more than enough to shift the mould with ease and restore the trays and aluminium items back to new. I was literally speechless. And for a standard household item that cost little over a dollar. Seriously, the only alternative was to throw away.
Anyway, with such a good positive start to things I got underway cleaning the bathroom using the same miracle powder. The toilet and sink became spotless within a minute or two as did the stainless steel shower. Soap racks, towel holders and shower curtains all played their part and turned out the same.
It was only then, through all the excitement of refreshing the bathroom that I realized that I’d only recently upgraded the solar system on the property, which meant I had the capacity to upgrade one or two electrical items, within reason.
One of the minor downsides of living off-the-grid has always been having to take cold showers. They can be somewhat unforgiving, especially during those times when you’re sick or have a fever. A nice new hot shower finally be the perfect addition to this newly rejuvenated bathroom. The decision was made instantly. Hands down. A nice new hot shower.
It’s been years since I bought a shower unit, so when called in to the local electrical store to check out a few, I was blown away by the selection. The more sophisticated showers offered things like temperature control, water pressure adjustment, clock, am/fm radio, all manner of features that you wouldn’t necessarily associate with an overhead hot water dispenser. Unfortunately for me, the price was a little out of my league, as I wanted to get a few accessories to go with it, just to finish off the project.
It didn’t take long to find a couple of websites offering new and used items that would make the entire purchase slightly cheaper than the top end shower from the local store. The most comprehensive and user-friendly one I found is www.for-sale.com. Check it out!
Anyway, soon enough I’ll be getting back from my daily run to a powerful hot jet wash, back steam and hydro foot massage while deciding which of my favourite fresh juices to indulge in. Sublime!
Catch you soon!
Hello lovelies, welcome back to my home and garden blog. Standing in the paint aisle staring at the endless sea of colors in front of you can becoming more tiring each and every trip. You will flip flop between so many colors and shades that the store will start charging you for sample sheets, and you still might not have picked up the best choice. When you get home with buckets in hand you might realize that your new paint color doesn’t truly reflect the tone of your room or that it throws out the rest of the mood you have worked so hard to culminate. But worry no longer, as I have compiled a list of some of my favorite gray paints. These paints have all been tested by my amazing self, and if that is not enough then you can leave. Read more

Hello everyone, welcome back to another exciting post on my home and garden blog. Me and my partner recently upsized our living conditions, and as such we have been looking for more ‘things’ to fill the house with. The first place that I thought needed filling up was our kitchen, up to this point we had only a toaster, blender and microwave. I wanted some more appliances and gadgets to fill the counters and help keep costs down, so I went over to my favourite website for used goods, http://www.used.forsale, and found some great deals on kitchen appliances and gadgets. Here are some of the ones I think will end up saving me money. Read more

Creative uses for a Kenwood K - Mix
Hi all and welcome back to my home and garden blog. I’ve recently redone my kitchen and one of the things I was really excited to buy a KitchenAid or a Kenwood K Mix. Seeing as we’d already spent a lot of money on the redesign and decoration of our new kitchen, we couldn’t afford to buy a brand new mixer, or the famed KitchenAid. Instead we had a look on my favourite second hand online classified ads website, www.forsale.co.za where I managed to scoop up the Kenwood K-Mix in Raspberry for an incredible price, and it came with some of the great attachments including the Spaghetti pasta cutter and the Flat Pasta Roller, although I have a feeling there’s still lots of attachments I would like to purchase! Hi folks, so Viv here again. So sorry for the lack of updates lately, but I’ve been madly gardening in the beautiful spring time, getting ready for summer. My sister and her two girls have recently moved into my neighbourhood and we have discovered that my garden is a mystical wonderland inhabited by many fairies, so we have created a little village of fairy cottages for them all to live. Thankfully there was a good supply of second-hand fairy cottages available online, so it has been a fun and cheap exercise. Read more
Welcome back folks. Today I wanted to share with you a big project I’m currently working on and the steps I need to complete before I achieve it. The main goal is to build a veggie garden and while I’d love to say that’s the essence of the project I’m currently working on, the truth is that for the moment I’m just laboring: cutting, clearing, weeding and pulling. The notion of planting and edging the garden seems a lifetime away at this stage. I cannot believe how rapidly, in just a short period of time, things can grow here in the tropics. I live up in the jungle next to the National Park so the variety of life here is wonderful. I’m literally surrounded by a million different shades of green. It feels like paradise, but along with it comes a lot of effort. Read more
Juicer and Juicing
Hey there folks. I’ve been feeling a bit run down of late which is why I have been a bit quiet here on the blog. I have been burning the candles at both ends and not maintaining the healthiest of diets if I am being honest. So I have vowed to make sure that I get a good seven to eight hours uninterrupted sleep a night from now on and take better care of myself. I’m going to also address my diet and get on a bit of a health kick. I’m going to do this by going on a juice diet for a week or so. That is right! I am going to officially be known as a juicer! I am going to use this blog post as an opportunity to delve a little deeper into the world of juicers for sale and the benefits that it offers. Is it for everyone? Is it even as healthy as everybody says? Let’s do a little research and find out. Read more
I know this is a bit of a move away from the norm but I have already spoken about my new interest in coffee and after having a play with my friends new bespoke coffee machine I thought I would discuss espresso coffee. Now this really does involve a scientific mind and an artist’s touch! I’m not saying I have quite mastered those two things but practice makes perfect! Anyway, what makes the perfect espresso and how do you achieve it? An espresso coffee is a strong, short shot of coffee with a well-balanced flavour. It is knowing how to create this balance that really does create the perfect espresso. Read more

Hi there. Welcome back to my Blog. Hope you are all well! Life is pretty hectic at the moment but I am having a really great time. I told you recently that I was helping my friend set up a new café. Well I have really immersed myself into the role – I don’t think my friend was expecting me to do so much but she has been really thankful for my help and loves all of my design ideas. I am actually thinking about taking this up as a regular thing. I have a lot of friends in the area who are always looking for interior designers to help with design ideas for their homes and businesses so I think I would be able to find a fair bit of work. Word of mouth is obviously really important so if my friend is happy with everything I do (which she definitely seems to be so far) then I know this will get passed onto other people. Anyway, let’s see what happens…don’t want to run before I can walk! Read more
Hi there its Viv again, another hectic few weeks have gone by but lots of exciting stuff I would like to talk about! Read more
Hey its Viv and I’m back for another chat. I’ve been a bit busy over the last week or so, so it’s been a while since the last time I got a post up. You know how it goes, another week goes by in the blink of an eye and you’re wondering where it went. I’d been doing trips backwards and forwards to my mother’s house as she hasn’t been well. I’ve been getting her shopping, cooking her food, there’s been trips to the hospital and all this whilst trying to fit in a job and some me time. Well things have thankfully calmed down a bit now. She’s back on her feet and feeling much, much, better so I’m back to just looking after myself. Read more
