  • British Consumers Waste Millions of £s Daily Says New Survey By YouGov

    Submitted by asap_press on 07.10.2010 17:19:18

Accepting huge credit charges, double tipping, refusing to barter and throwing away money off vouchers – even though money is tight, British consumers continue to throw money away

    • Even if the service or food is poor, 29% of customers tip in restaurants
    • 67% of women never wear some of the shoes or clothes they have bought
    • 78% of people fail to take advantage of money off vouchers or have thrown them away
    • 40% of consumers fail to take faulty products back for a refund
    • 10% of people said they wouldn’t negotiate on price
    • Only 35% of people compare credit card rates and only 31% compare banking interest rates before signing up

29 September 2010 – A new YouGov survey found that consumers in Britain and potentially throwing away £millions daily. Regardless of the current economic climate and money being tight, double tipping in restaurants, throwing away money off vouchers and continuing to accept high credit charges is still occurring.

Over 2,000 people from across the UK answered the online survey for DiscountVouchers.co.uk, the money saving website, and found that 78% did not use money saving vouchers and throw them away. Almost one third (29%) of people said they tipped in a restaurant even if the service or food was poor; and those accepting bank charges amounted to 43%.

Around 14% of men said to impress their colleagues or friends they told someone to ‘keep the change’, whilst the 67% of woman admitted to buying shoes or clothes and never wore them. Regardless of the increase of comparison websites, one 31% and 35% of consumers compare bank or credit card interest rates respectively, before they sign up.

Mr Simon Terry from DiscountVouchers.co.uk said, “The survey results show that people are wasting money everyday by refusing to negotiate, not taking advantage of discounts and throwing money away. Consumers need to look at how much they spend everyday and see where they can reduce that amount or where savings can be made. With many people struggling with money at the moment, it is vital for people to start watching their outgoings – negotiating on prices is much more acceptable in Great Britain nowadays and is a great way to start managing your finances”.

    Tipping in Restaurants
Dining out in restaurants is a common place for wasted money. More than 1 in 7 men (15%) said if they fancied the waitress, they would leave a large tip, around 7% left a tip to impress a new date or partner, and those tipping to impress business associates amounted to 3%.

From the results, 38% of people from London would leave a tip even if the service or food was poor and around 30% of Scottish people have double tipped. Diners in the South West (10%), London (10%) and Wales (14%) leave large tips if they fancy the waitress/waiter; while 7% of people surveyed in the East Midlands try to impress a new date or partner by tipping highly.

    Haggling
Women aren’t as happy to negotiate over prices than men – 8% of men said they would never haggle compared to 12% for women – regardless that businesses nowadays would rather cut prices just to get a sale. Haggling is more commonplace when buying a car (55% of people have tried), whereas that figure in electrical goods shops is only 9% or 8% in travel agents. Only 1% of the surveyed people would haggle over the price in high street clothes or shoe shops, restaurants or a supermarket.

Throughout the UK, people in Wales, the South West and the South East are more likely to haggle over prices (only 7% would refuse to negotiate prices), while in the East Midlands and North East, they are less likely to negotiate (14% in both areas would never haggle).

    Sales Doesn’t Always Mean Savings
A common occurrence for those buying products in sales and not using them is a massive reason why £millions are being wasted. 60% of women tend to buy new clothes or shoes (38%) in sales and never use them. Men buy sports equipment (7%), computers (8%) and DVDs or CDs (19%) and never use them. Londoners are the most likely to not use the sale items (67%) they bought, while 43% of Welsh people actually use the sale items they buy.

Mr Terry added, “Consumers should think before they buy – are they going to use and do they need it, and more importantly, can they get it cheaper? Most of the time a better deal can be negotiated or a discount can be made”.

Further details can be found at www.discountvouchers.co.uk

All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 2189 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 28th – 30th July 2010. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).

  • Back to School Costs Reach £1000+ per Child Says New Survey

    Submitted by asap_press on 13.09.2010 14:45:41

    travel / tourism

New uniforms, must have brands, extra activities – parents are faced with growing expenditure at the start of the school year

7 September 2010 – A new national survey has highlighted the spiralling costs of sending children to school, with clothing, accessories, school trips and additional activities – plus increasing pressure to have famous name brands – resulting in parents spending up to £1000 and more per child.

The survey, for money saving website DiscountVouchers.co.uk, questioned over 600 people from across the UK on their expenditure in the run up to the new school year.

Nearly 50% of respondents said they felt under pressure to buy their children famous brand shoes or accessories for school, with one in four buying them because their children want to be the same as others; but for one in 10 they worry their child will be bullied if they don’t have the must-have names.

Mothers are more likely to feel pressured into buying these branded items, and are twice as likely as men to worry about bullying if the child doesn’t have them. Just 10% of respondents said their school didn’t allow branded items.

Simon Terry of DiscountVouchers.co.uk, said: “It’s frightening how quickly the costs mount up for parents, particularly at a time when money is so tight for many. The importance of having famous name items continues to be an issue, but what is concerning are the bullying worries that come out of not having the right brands.”

95% of respondents said they have spent up to £500 this year on new school clothing and equipment; while 81% said they spend up to £500 on additional school trips and activities such as music and swimming lessons. 1 in 10 parents said they spend up to £1000 on these extra activities, with 3% saying they spend more than £1000.

The survey found that 90% of parents have bought new uniforms and shoes for the start of the 2010/11 school year; 75% have bought new sportswear; 65% have bought new school bags, new coats and stationery; and 21% have purchased new sports equipment for their children. 1 in 12 parents have also bought their child a new mobile phone before this school year started.

50% of respondents had to buy different school uniforms for the summer and winter, adding to the costs involved.

But despite money being tighter this year, over 62% of parents said they would never send their child to school in a second hand uniform.

“With many families having less disposable income due to issues such as pay freezes and rising fuel costs it’s becoming increasingly important for them to look at ways to save money. Many school items are essential, but there are others where shopping around and using money off vouchers can help them cut back,” adds Terry.

  • Free Guide to Negotiating Hints Downloadable from DiscountVouchers.co.uk

    Submitted by asap_press on 27.08.2010 03:51:25

Higher UK retail prices and new year VAT increase prompt website to launch negotiating guide with partner Pareto

26 August 2010 – DiscountVouchers.co.uk, the popular consumer deals site, has introduced a free downloadable guide which offers hints on how to get better at negotiating cheap deals when shopping for products. The guide has been produced in partnership with Pareto, one of the country’s leading training companies.

Top 10 Tips – How to Bag a Bargain‘ is offered as a download from the DiscountVouchers.co.uk site and is produced in conjunction with leading training company Pareto to give shoppers top hints for haggling when buying things.

Simon Terry, managing director of DiscountVouchers.co.uk, comments: “As prices in the UK go on rising and there’s also a VAT rise in the New Year too, our guide is perfectly timed to help people learn new skills and tactics for negotiating great deals.”

“People in Britain don’t have much experience of bartering for deals, but they can learn them quickly and easily thanks to the hints and tips offered in our new guide. People can learn how to make budgets stretch further thanks to the tips and hints we have offered with Pareto.”

    Pareto’s Top Tips include –

    *Do your research
Shop around to get to know the best available prices for the product you want to buy, so when you come to discuss it with a salesperson you really know what you are talking about. They will no doubt attempt to get you to pay more than you want to so be aware of recommended retail prices and look into alternatives. Also remember to check alternative suppliers so that you are always as well informed as you can be.

    *Negotiation isn’t just about price
Getting yourself the best deal possible doesn’t always mean some money off the product in question, it can mean something else. You can ask the salesperson to give you some accessories or extras in place of a discount, which can get you something you might not use yourself but you could give to a friend or relative as a gift.

*Don’t be pressured into accepting the deal
Shop assistants and salespeople commonly put shoppers under pressure to make snap judgements and quick decisions, so try not to feel pressured into making choices and decisions you don’t want to. Be aware of these pressuring tactics and try not to let the shop assistant pressure you into paying more than you really want to for an item. It’s your money after all.

New poll highlights Brits’ worst fashion mistakes by the pool and says Midlands has poorest fashion sense

    • Top Holiday Fashion Faux Pas –
    1) Socks & Sandals
    2) Exposed beer bellies
    3) Tight small trunks on men
    4) Thongs on women
    5) Sunburn
    6) Football tops on women
    7) Logo overload on clothes
    8) Football tops on men
    • People from Birmingham & the Midlands voted as having worst fashion sense in the UK, followed by Newcastle & the North East and then Scotland
    • Internationally – Americans voted as having worst fashion sense; Italians as best

18 August 2010 – As thousands of British tourists and travellers head overseas for summer holidays, a new poll has shone a light on the worst holiday fashion mistakes. Socks and sandals together are ranked the biggest mistake, followed quickly by exposed beer bellies. Travellers from the Midlands in the UK are ranked as the worst holiday dressers.

The poll took the views of 600 people about their likes and dislikes of summer holiday wardrobes worn by British holidaymakers, with small trunks on men, thongs on women, sunburn and clothing with too many logos considered to be the biggest mistakes. A third of people dislike football shirts on women, 20% of people dislike football shirts on men.

1 in 5 of survey respondents reckon that people from Birmingham and the Midlands are the worst dressed Brits on holiday with Newcastle and the North East, Scotland, Essex and Manchester & the North West coming next respectively. Travellers from Yorkshire and East England were reckoned to have the best holiday fashion sense.

The survey, conducted by money saving website DiscountVouchers.co.uk, rated the Americans as the worst dressed nationality for their loud shirts, with the Germans, the Greeks and British coming along next. Italians are considered the best dressed, with the Spanish next.

More than 83% – and 92% of male respondents- reckon that men have worse dress sense on holiday than women, in spite of men (43%) being more likely to spend money on new clothing before a holiday. 57% of male respondents and 68% of females said they wear clothes on holiday that they have owned for over five years.

The main reasons and factors in buying holiday clothing were listed in the survey too, with two thirds admitting they buy something if it looks good in the mirror, 1 in 5 saying that they buy things based on price. 14% of people surveyed spend less than £50 on clothes for a holiday, while the 70% spend between £50 and £200 on a holiday wardrobe. 2% admitted that they spend more than £500 getting the right holiday gear.

Simon Terry of DiscountVouchers.co.uk commented: “Saving money is important at all times for everyone of course and we can help people to save on holiday clothing. People saying that price is a factor means that shopping around is essential and getting discounted deals online is a great way to save.”

The survey also asked about individual holiday fashion disasters, with responses including trunks/swimsuits that became transparent; Miami Vice style trousers; swimsuits that were too tight – and one like a mankini; peeling sunburn; and neon clothing.

The site also reports high user numbers even in the face of the continuing tough economic climate.

The online marketplace, which was introduced in May 2009, today enjoys more than 1.8 million unique users and also reports that after a year’s business it has over 13,500 fans on its Facebook page. The trend shows just how many UK consumers today enjoy the benefits of saving money at top stores by using codes and vouchers.

Simon Terry, managing director of DiscountVouchers.co.uk, says: “We’ve enjoyed a magnificent first year of trading on the DiscountVouchers.co.uk site, and shoppers in the UK seem to really have the discount deals habit. As the recession rolls on and people need to save and make budgets stretch, this is a really positive trend.”

The DiscountVouchers.co.uk website is now home to listings of more than 500 retailers and site users can enjoy over 2000 new deals every day online. The site also continues to build and develop stronger relationships with featured retailers through the introduction of new exclusive deals and promotional activities.

Simon Terry continues: “Since launching we’ve grown and grown and today enjoy more than 60,000 unique visitors every day, we’re delighted with the figures. People trust our team to get them the best money saving offers around, with users knowing that they’re able to save money on everything from dining out to clothes to holidays. Suppliers and retailers can enjoy a new distribution channel too, something reflected in the fact that the number of companies who choose to work with us is up too.”

The DiscountVouchers.co.uk website features money saving offers from both major high street brands and specialist retailers, including stores such as Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s, Travelodge, First Choice, lastminute.com and Boden.
